Overnet Hits 1 Million Users

For the last few weeks, Overnet's population has been rapidly gaining strength. During the latter weeks of March, the network this community was doing well with approximately 500,000 users. Then, after the heavily revised version .47 was released, its userbase exploded with an additional 500,000 users. These numbers reflect the total number of users connected to the network at any given time. It should also be noted that these numbers are fluid, and could represent a slightly higher or lower total.

Much of Overnets recent success can be attributed to vast improvements made to version .47, and the continuing interest in the eDonkey2000 community. While it seems Overnet has surpassed eDonkey in terms of users, the latter community has non-the-less established itself as one of the largest P2P networks with well over 700,000 users. To clarify, the eDonkey client is released as a hybrid, because it also includes Overnet support. Conversely, Overnet can be downloaded as an independent program.

The combined strength of these two networks, which numbers well over 1.5 million, surpasses Napster during its peak. We're witnessing yet another example of the movie and music industry's absolute failure in curbing the P2P phenomenon.
